Week1: Golden Pose

This week lesson is about Golden Pose. The goal is to make a clear and strong body pose. The pose should show action and feeling even if it is only a shadow. I need to think about:

  • Exaggeration and personality
  • Clear silhouette
  • Line of action (a big curve through the body)
  • Balance and weight
  • Asymmetry (not the same arms or legs)

I used a drawing reference with a strong action line. It helped me to make the pose more alive in 3D.

I made one pose in Maya. The silhouette looks clear, the body has a smooth line of action, and the arms and legs are not the same. I also pushed the upper body to show more energy.

I set up the turntable animation.

I learned that silhouette test is very useful, line of action makes the pose stronger, and asymmetry feels more natural.

I chose a clip from Tom and Jerry and did a simple golden pose analysis with draw-overs in SyncSketch.

I watched the video The 12 Principles of Animation and took notes. To make it easier to understand, I added some Chinese annotations.
